Sanne Houby-Nielsen appointed Director General

The Government has today appointed Sanne Houby-Nielsen as Director General of the National Museums of World Culture. She will take on her new role on 1 May, and will thereby cease to be Director of the Museum of Mediterranean and Near Eastern Antiquities and the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities.

Museums around the world are currently experiencing a phase of fast and exciting developments, paving the way for new forms of cooperation and dialogue across national and cultural borders. The National Museums of World Culture have an important part to play in this work.

"As a forum for current contemporary issues, and with our fantastic archaeological, historical and ethnographical collections from the entire world and virtually every period, the National Museums of World Culture can be a clear voice for a new global historical perspective," says Ms Houby-Nielsen. "We want the curiosity of children, young people and others, and their interest in an increasingly globalised world, to be at the heart of this. I am therefore delighted to have been appointed Director General, and am eager to take on this role."

Ms Houby-Nielsen has been a Director at the National Museums of World Culture since 2000. She holds a doctorate in classical archaeology, and her previous roles include Head of Unit for the Royal Cast Collection at the National Gallery of Denmark in Copenhagen and field manager for the Danish-Greek excavations in Chalcis.
