The First Nations of North America
New exhibition opens October 25th 2008.
Since the 17th century the Native Americans have been a part of our Swedish cultural history. The departure point for the exhibition is the museum’s comprehensive artifact and picture collections from Native America.
In the exhibition traditional conceptions are displayed in contrast to new perspectives, while the popular stereotypes are duly noted. Parts of the exhibition can be seen as typical for an ethnographic museum, but there are also unexpected sections which for example show how Native American children were schooled to be white, how the Swedish women’s rights activist Fredrika Bremer viewed the “North American Indian” in the 1900 Century, and the evolution of the reservation. Historical sections and insights into the situation today illuminate current issues about identity, ethnicity and integration.
The exhibition also shows photography, film, contemporary art and many original objects.
