The museum

Through exciting public programmes and exhibitions, the
Museum of Ethnography wants to expand the perceptions of
various life styles and cultures worldwide. Departing from its abundant collections and their rich provenance, the museum strives to offer knowledge and perspectives for reflection on what it means to be human. By providing interpretations of specific, universal questions, the museum wishes to create receptivity towards the unknown.

Exhibitions

Bringing the World Home is one of the permanent exhibitions of the museum, telling about Swedish travellers and explorers who dared to encounter foreign worlds. The disciples of Carl Linnaeus, A E Nordenskiöld, Sven Hedin and Sten Bergman are among the most famous. This exhibition shows how the image of the world is not only defi ned by "reality" but also to a great extent
by the imagination and needs of the traveller.

The original inhabitants of North America
is another theme introduced at the museum. Among other
things, the collections display a totem pole from the northwest coast of America, ceramics, textiles
and weapons.

An interdisciplinary exhibition, Creative Man, highlights what we humans have in common, regardless of our cultural background and context: Eating, sleeping, loving, working and understanding our surrounding world. This is an exhibition on personal, cultural and universal ideas, brought from individual to individual through myths
and stories, from one generation to the next.

Public programme and education

The museum present extensive pedagogical
activities directed towards schools. Tours and special
programmes offer a complement to the own educational activities of the school, relating to several school subjects. The goal is to promote an enjoyable, lifelong learning.

The Museum of Ethnography also offers an extensive public programme with lectures, courses, films etc. Theme parties with rhythm and music for children and families, the celebration of the Tibet New Year and textile printing in the workshop are some popular activities.
